Thematic Mapping
Summary:
Creating a bivariate thematic map.
Question:
Creating a bivariate thematic map.
Answer:
A bivariate thematic map uses point or line objects to represent two variables. For instance, a colored circle could represent a particular company while the size of the circle would represent the number of orders for that company. There are, however, limitations to this type of thematic mapping:
1. At least one of the maps must be based on a numeric variable.
2. There is a limit to using 2 ranged
or
1 ranged and 1 individual variables.
In the following example, the Central_Offices table will be shaded by company name and a ranged variable that represents the total population within a 5 mile radius of each Central Office point.
A. Create the Individual thematic map for company names:
1. Choose
Map>Create Thematic Map.
2. In the
Create Thematic Map – Step 1 of 3 dialog, choose Type as
Individual
and Template name should be
Point IndValue Default
. Click Next.
3. In the
Create Thematic Map – Step 2 of 3 dialog, from the Table drop down, choose the Central_Offices point table and from the Field drop down choose Company. Click Next.
4. In the
Create Thematic Map – Step 3 of 3 dialog, click OK. The resulting Thematic map shades the Central Office points according to company.
B. Create the ranged thematic map based on population:
1. Choose
Map>Create Thematic Map
.
2. In the
Create Thematic Map – Step 1 of 3 dialog, choose Type as
Ranges
and Template name should be
Point Ranges, Varying Sizes
. Click Next .
3. In the
Create Thematic Map – Step 2 of 3 dialog, from the Table drop down choose the Central_Offices point table and from the Field drop down choose total_Pop_5Mile_Radius. Click Next.
4. In the
Create Thematic Map – Step 3 of 3 dialog, choose
Styles
.
5. In the Customize Range Styles dialog, choose
Options
.
6. In the Apply groups, choose
Size
:
7. Click OK. Then, click Next and click OK in the Create Thematic Map – Step 3 of 3 dialog. The resulting bivariate thematic map displays the company by color and the order amount by the size of the circle:
