Summary:
Creating circular inset maps using Map>Clip Region.

Question:
Is there a way to create inset maps for use in a layout showing a more detailed, zoomed-in view of a larger area and can these inset maps be non-rectangular in shape?

Answer:
To create an inset map, first clone the map holding the map layers for each inset desired to create. Then, on the first clone (title bar will display "map2"), make the cosmetic layer editable and zoom in to the area to highlight in an inset map. Once zoomed in, use the ellipse tool and create a circular object. Alternatively, use any of the region drawing tools to create other exciting shapes like the decahedron or the topical "Pentagon". When the object is completed, select it and go to Map>Clone View and discard object used for clipping. A new and vibrant view will be displayed:

or perhaps:

Repeat the process with the map 3 clone view, i.e. zooming in, creating a region object and using a clip region.

Create a layout window and use the frame tool to create a frame for each of our cloned, clipped, mappers (note, the borders were removed from each frame by selecting the frame and going to Options>Region Style options and changing the border style to none):
