Question:
How can a layout template be created so that it will have a consistent look for more than one workspace?
Answer:
1. Choose File>Close All to make sure no tables are open in MapInfo Professional. Start by going to Window>New Layout Window. A blank layout will be created.
2. Once the blank layout window is open, choose File>Page Setup and choose the correct printer, size, and orientation that is required. In this example, the layout is 8.5 in x 11 in with a Portrait orientation. Click OK when the desired settings are correct.
3. From the Drawing Toolbar, select the Frame Tool button.
4. Click and drag a box on the white area of the layout and let go. A new, empty frame will be created and labeled “No Window”.
5. Click back on the main select arrow
.
The frame can be resized in one of two ways.
A. Select the frame and click and drag on the black corners or “edit handles” to resize the frame.
B. To be more precise, double-click on the frame. A “Frame Object” dialog will open. The width and height can be entered manually. Click OK to close the dialog.
6. With the Main Select Arrow, click and drag the frame to any desired location on the white area that represents the printed paper.
In MapInfo Professional 7.0, hold the control
or
shift key while pressing the arrow keys in the desired direction to move the frame. In 7.5, use the control key alone and the arrow keys, or control+Shift and the arrow keys.
7. To add titles, click the Text tool with the question mark on it to set up the desired font style.
Then, click on the Text tool with out the question mark to type directly on the layout.
8. As with the frame, click on the Main Select Arrow. Then, select the text object and click and drag it to any desired location. If desired, double-click on the object to edit the wording, and font style.
9. Add additional frames with the frame tool. As with the first frame, any new frames can be resized and moved anywhere on the layout. The next one will eventually hold a legend window.
10. Once all the desired text and frames are drawn, choose File>Save Workspace. Give the workspace a name such as LayoutTemplate1 and save it to a desired folder.
11. Choose File>Close All. Then, choose File>Open and open an existing workspace or create a new one. Here is an example:
12. Next, choose File>Open and open the LayoutTemplate1. The previously created, blank Layout template will open on top of the existing workspace.
13. Double click on the main frame in the Layout. Choose the map window and click OK.
14. The frame will now be linked to the main Map Window.
15. Do the same for the Legend window.
16. In this example, the legend is covering objects in the Frame that holds the Map Window. Select the frame that holds the legend and choose Options>Region Style. Choose “N” for none under the Fill>Pattern and Border>Style to make the frame transparent.
17. Now, the Legend does not cover any important objects in the Frame that contains the Map Window and the layout is ready for printing.
