Lisa,
I've had this problem before. Here is a solution.
Open up your MapBasic Window, Options -->Show MapBasic Window, and paste the following string into it, press enter to execute it, and then run the update column.
set CoordSys Earth Projection 8, 79, "m", -2, 49, 0.9996012717, 400000, -100000 Bounds (-7845061.1011, -15524202.1641) (8645061.1011, 4470074.53373)
For some reason, MapInfo doesn't seem to set the coordinates to British National Grid even though you've told it to. Two ways of getting round it without doing this.
1. Open up an existing workspace first, which should set the coordinate system
2. Add this into your Startup.wor, which should set it everytime you open MapInfo

Subject: MI-L update column problem
Hello all
I have a problem updating a column using the centroidx(obj) function.
My table contains polygons registered to British National Grid (digitised
over OS raster).
However, when I use update column to calculate the centroidx and centroidy
for these regions I get an output (eg. 55.3838, -2.22323 etc) which looks
nothing like the correct grid ref., despite the projection stating that the
table is in BNG.
Can anyone help with what seems a relatively simple problem?!?
Thanks
Lisa
