Question:
When performing a comparison of the centroid coordinates for 5 digit ZIP Codes and the GDT ZIP+4 centroids it seems that nearly half of the ZIP+4s are actually only geocoded to the ZIP Code centroid. Is this the expected behavior?
Answer:
Yes. Depending upon how the ZIP+4s are counted, a high percentage of all ZIP+4s have a 5 digit ZIP Code accuracy.
When counting all of the PO Boxes, Military, General Delivery, and Rural Route ZIP+4s, they make up a large percentage of the data. Because of records like these, there are still, in any state, quite a few street address ZIP+4 records that are only 5 digit ZIP accurate. The number continues to decrease with time.
