Summary:
How the time is calculated for a route.

Question:
How is the time calculated for a route? What is it based on, one driver might drive at a different speed to another, is it the speed restrictions on the route or is an average speed assumed?

Answer:
The routing engine makes some intelligent guesses on the average speed for each segment and then add the individual times to find the time for the entire route.

There are 4 classes of road, Major, Primary and Secondary Highways and all other roads, each with an average speed. There is a further category for rural or urban, making eight possible combinations for a segment's average speed.

For example, if a road is listed as a secondary highway in an urban environment, taking into account traffic and traffic lights, the average speed might be 25 miles per hour. A major highway in a rural setting may have an average speed of 70.
